Camera Raw 5.3 is working for countless people. The problem is not with the plug-in. In all probability, you have installed the new version improperly. It has to replace the previous version, it has to be in precisely the folder specified in the download instructions. I don't have a Mac, but it is my understanding that there is a user folder and a system folder with the same name. Check the installation instructions and make sure you have put the plug-in where it is supposed to be. This is user error, not Adobe error.
open Hard drive go to Library / application support/adobe/plugins/cs4/File formats this is in system drive put acr 5.3 here make sure photoshop and bridge cs4 is closed
How to tell
open photoshop cs4 go to Photoshop about plug ins
should only be one Camera raw there if two means not installed right
The more virulent the rant, the greater the likelihood PEBKAC. It never fails.

There are three possibilities of user error here:

* the ACR-plug-in download was not decompressed properly;

* the wrong plug-in was downloaded (Windows version instead of Mac); and, most likely,

* the plug-in is in the wrong location. Here's the correct location:

c
c This shows the correct path to ACR 5.2, which is the one you have to replace with ACR 5.3 at this precise location.

One possibility not connected with user error is

* a corrupted download. (Try downloading it again.)
Clarifying Jim's post:
> I don't have a Mac, but it is my understanding that there is a user folder and a system folder with the same name.
Ooooops! No! Caution: The System Folder is not involved in this at all. Stay away from the System folder.
What Jim meant is that there is a ROOT LEVEL Library and a user Library (not "folder"). You want the ROOT LEVEL Library, not your username Library.
Isn't ACR 5.3 still only a beta release? Would that make a difference? I
won't install it before I see the final release and then not until it's been
out for a few weeks...
>Isn't ACR 5.3 still only a beta release?
Technically, it's a release candidate, a step above beta. It's well tested and very stable.
I'm having the same problem...... Downloaded 5.3, tried to install it, got the "failed to install" error.
If there's a specific directory I need to extract the files into, can you let me know where it is? 'Cause I'm not finding anything in the download instructions.
Macintosh or Windows?
I just noticed you post in the Lightroom forum. Do you also have Photoshop CS4? You cannot install the ACR plug-in in Lightroom, you need to download the newest version of Lightroom, but I don't know if that has the camera support that ACT 5.3 has as of right now, as I don't use Lightroom.
>the newest version of Lightroom, but I don't know if that has the camera support that ACT 5.3 has as of right now, as I don't use Lightroom.
That should obviously read ACR 5.3, not ACT. Sorry about the typo.
I'm on a PC, and running CS4 as well as Lightroom 2.3. I still can't find any directory-specific information in the installation information. What am I missing?
Version 5.3 of Adobe Camera Raw comes as an installer in a Zip file. Download and open up the Zip file then run the setup.exe program in the zip. The installer takes care of putting the files into the correct directories for you.

As said, the installer should figure it out by itself. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the installer was too dumb to figure it out if you moved CS4 from its default location or when you have it on a different disk (like D: instead of C:)
If you need more information where files get installed, see the manual installation instructions on the release page for ACR 5.2 ( same info will be included in ACR 5.3) http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4220
Note: the installer will take care of placing the plug-in in the correct directory for you
