NEF files from a Nikon scanner are not Camera Raw files. They're really TIFF files masquerading with an inappropriate extension misused by Nikon.

Granted, they are not raw files, ... but are you suggesting you can simply rename these files and open them as TIFF??
That should work.
Takes about 30 seconds to try it....
After renaming NEF to TIF
(1) cONVERTING TO TIF ONLY RESULTS IN A SMALL PREVIEW TYPE OF IMAGE OPENING.
(2) I tried pasting in missing files into windows system32 from a 30 day Nikon Capture 1.1 software;
And >>> Nikon NEF Plugin.8bi >> into CS2 plugins photoshop only> fileformats.
Photoshop stops asking for files but opens nEF neither.

By the way my files are from a coolscan4000
You can set NikonScan to save your scans as Tiffs instead of NEFs which is what I do.
No, you can't convert a file by just changing the extension in the file name.
Nikon NEF scans are TIFFs in a proprietary wrapper only Nikon software can read.
Do as Ann says in post #5 and save the scans as TIFF in the Nikon software if you want to work with them in non0Nikon software.
