CS3 Camera Raw Too Many Files Open at the Same time alert!!!

Please help me. I keep getting this error message in Camera Raw that says there are too many files open at the same time - but I only have 100 open:( Please help - I was getting this error with CS2 and thought upgrading to CS3 would fix it and it didn't!!!

I am not presuming to challenge anyone's workflow here. But from my perspective having 100 images open in Photoshop at one time seems to be a lot to try to work with. At least I would find myself getting confused. I have received that message a few times when I have had a large number of images highlighted in Bridge (for renaming, for instance) and then double-click on one of them. I'm glad for the warning because I wouldn't want to open that many at once anyway. And I think that is what the warnings for, to prevent people like me from making those kinds of "mistakes".

I had something similar happen to me yesterday using CS2 (Windows XP). I wanted to open around 66 files from bridge for a batch process, but highlighting them and douple clicking wouldn't do it. I tried right clicking and selecting "open using camera raw" and that worked fine. I didn't have this problem, however, opening smaller numbers (under 20).

For batch processing of large numbers of files, one can use a Photoshop action that opens one file at a time, processes it, and then closes. You then simply select the files in bridge and apply the action.

If the images require individual settings with Camera Raw, then you can open a large number of files in Camera Raw and then click on the thumbnails of the opened files and apply the needed individual settings.

How many files you can open in Camera Raw is dependent on how much free ram you have available to Photoshop. I've had hundreds open at a time and Bruce Fraser reported he had over 1500 open at once. I have 6 gigs of ram in a dual G5...so your milage will vary.

It is indeed good to know that, depending on available memory and other considerations, one may have hundreds or even 1500 raw files open at once in camera raw, but realistically when would one need to have 1500 files open at once?

I open a hundred or so RAW files at a time as standard practice. Sure, my Mac Pro has 6 gigs of RAM but I used to do the same thing on my DP 1GHz G4 with a lowly 1.5 gigs. Even with that machine, It loaded them pretty quickly. If the warning freaks you out (or more likely, annoys), turn it off. Why do you think they included a "don't show again" checkbox?

This is crazy, We typically run thru 1800 to 2500 shots at a time, I am getting the message also... We were able to do this with CS2 no problem.. Why is it not working in CS3 is there a threshold? I've tried changing cache memory, etc...

I am having the same annoying problem in CS3. I used to be able to open (and still am on the same computer)over 300 files at once, whichg is just fine if you have to edit a few hundred to a thousand a night like I do. But this new limit make CS3 wasted money for me!

Have you actually tried simply disregarding the "warning" and checking the box labeled "Don't show this again"?

I think this might be another issue, Ramón.

In another thread, Thomas K. said that due to a limitation in Photoshop there's a 200 image limit when hosting ACR. However, another user said that opening 200+ images in ACR
                                i from within Bridge
                                works fine.

                                Haven't tried it, though.

I am mystified by this discussion. Perhaps someone could walk me through their workflow that requires opening 100's (or 1,000's) of images at a time in Camera Raw.

Perhaps these don't REQUIRE it, but they are examples where it can be useful:

                                    1. I have had an occasion to individually edit (mainly cropping) 100+ JPEGs and save the results under very tight time constraints. (Less than 10 seconds per image available). I have verified that I can do this in ACR 4.0 by opening them all at once then selecting them one by one.

                                    2. If I shoot a ColorChecker periodically, a very simple way of propogating the WB is to select lots of images in ACR then set the WB on the ColorChecker. (It is also possible instead, of course, to use "Develop Settings > Previous Conversion").

                                    3. I've sometimes opened lots of images in ACR, then selected similar ones and made some edits (eg. for CA, or colour, or presets, etc), so that several "about right" settings can be made to multiple images at once.

When people open a folder full of raw images in Lightroom, it is unremarkable. Why not in ACR too?

From another thread: this limitation has been created to avoid loss of files, crashes. It will ONLY happen if you open Camera Raw hosted by Photoshop. Use bridge, and use Command/Control+R to open the files in Camera Raw, hosted by Bridge. You'll have a faster processing that way.

IMHO several hundred images opened into ACR would be unwieldy to say the least, and presummably wanted for applying similar settings (other than the default) to multiple images. What's the difference between applying similar settings to multiple images in ACR, and doing the same thing with Bridge??

Loading mass images into ACR is understandable given the limitations of the ACR+Bridge workflow.

When you're in Bridge, you can't do trial-and-error raw adjustments without going back into ACR anyway. To many people, that means you might as well stay in one place during a work session, and if ACR is where all the controls are, then people are going to want to load all their images into ACR and not leave until they're done. Also, in Bridge there's no preview before applying, and no Undo after pasting settings. If you pasted settings in error, you cannot recover unless you happen to know what each image's old settings were. In ACR, if you do a sync that you realize was a bad idea, you just cancel out of the dialog box.

While I get along well enough with ACR+Bridge, the limitations of the workflow are part of why I find raw editing to be much more flexible and fun in Lightroom. Well, that and Lightroom's unlimited saved History...

I'm not sure what's "unwieldy" about it. 10 or 100 - you can quickly go through a stack of images in ACR and make any desired changes you want. Whether making the same or similar adjustment to similar files, or making radically different adjustments to different images as appropriate.

To me, loading 5 images at time into ACR to edit a stack of 100 images is a FAR less efficient workflow than simply loading all 100 at once.

I've done this with far more than 100! I think my maximum is 425 raw files, invoking ACR from Bridge without Photoshop even loaded, and it worked well. (I've also done 115 JPEGs in order to crop them under extreme time constraints).

It can be very slick. For example, if I use a ColorChecker a number of times in a shoot, it is easy to select just the set (perhaps 100 or so) that a particular ColorChecker shot applies to and set the WB for all of them.

Furthermore, in case people don't know, you can set ratings on raw images while many of them are open in ACR. (Just click under the thumbnail). It isn't as powerful as Lightroom, but it is not to be dismissed.

I suspect that it is possible to apply sensor-dust-healing to lots of images in the same way, and certainly it is easy to apply presets based on various selections.

Perhaps with AMG (Adobe Media Gallery) it will be sensible to use the above capability to process 100s of raw files, then create a set of web pages for the best of them, in not much more time than it would have taken in Lightroom. I judge that Lightroom is the "proper" tool for the job (perhaps after 1.1!), but Bridge+ACR can go a long way.

And....if you want to merely be working on adjusting images and applying settings you can STILL do this with many hundreds of images as long as Camera Raw is hosted by Bridge instead of Photoshop. See, when you host Camera Raw in Photoshop, there's an expectation that you actually want to OPEN the images in Photoshop, ya know? And that is what wasn't really working so good...so for CS3, that was stopped.

But Thomas has said you CAN still open many, many images into Camera Raw as long as it's hosted by Bridge-where the expectation is you are only adjusting settings...

That's why the default highlighted buttons are different. Camera Raw hosted by Photoshop highlights the Open Image while Camera Raw highlights the Done button.

And there is simply no good reason for actually opening even a hundred images into Photoshop at a single time. Not only is it almost impossible to keep track of that many images and navigate between them easily, it's a terrible and real drain on Photoshop resources and ram.
