    Camera Raw 4.1

    Thomas Knoll Level 2
      ...is starting to become available.

Currently it is available on ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/photoshop/cameraraw/...

The http links (and readme files) will probably go live later this week. It will also be available via Adobe Update Manager fairly soon, which is the recommended way for CS3 users to get it since it avoids having to install the plug-in manually.

Thanks, Thomas. I've had no issues with 4.0, well not counting the fill light slider response, so waiting for the updater route will work here. 4.0 has definitely been my favorite feature within the CS3 upgrade.

As soon at it's "official" I'll have a big story on Camera Raw 4.1 on PhotoshopNews.com...

The more controls, the better. That "Clarity" slider is wicked, just wicked! Awesome work!

I tried to install it into my CS2 plug-in folder only to realize that it is not compatible with CS2. Is it possible that Adobe will no longer provide CS2 users with the RAW plug-in?

                            My story is up...

                            See: About Camera Raw 4.1

Some backstory on the new Sharpening in Camera Raw 4.1 (and some of the other new things in 4.1)

As for new updates for Camera Raw 3.x, yes, it's a long standing policy to stop new updates to product Adobe no longer sells, so when Photoshop CS3 shipped with Camera Raw 4, Camera Raw 3.7 remains as the last update for Photoshop CS2...been that was since the begining of Camera Raw. But you can download the new DNG Converter 4.1 to convert new camera raw files to DNG that Camera Raw 3 & even Camera Raw 2.4 can read.

As a quick test, I just tried defringing an image that I had a LOT of PF trouble with before. Not perfect - but a massive improvement.

There is a nice balance between worthwhile global visual improvements such as Clarity, and specialised correction features such as defringing.

But since I'm now making the transition to Lightroom, I now have to wait for 1.1 .... waiting .... waiting!

                              (No - I WON'T ask "when?" I know better).

I like the result, and color adjustment options,

What bothers me is at least one step difference in "default" look
compared to Capture One ( Images are one step lighter in C1 ) .

You may be right but I find that very upsetting I am the only Pro photographer I know working in Brooklyn that usually runs out to buy the new versions of PS as soon as they come out. Most Pro's get used to the workflow (Wedding Pro's) at least and like to stick to it so they hold on to the old versions quite long. It's bad enough that the new version of PS does not let one open up the same amount of raw files like CS2 did!!
PS is more or less for Pro's and Pro's for the most part shoot allot! So I find this limit a real issue! I have 4gb of RAM on one computer and three on another so it's not my machines limitations causing this.

                                            Following "Lemberger Erika":

If I try to open more than 200 raw files in ACR 4.1 I get a failure message.

The equivalent number is 400 raw files in ACR 3.7.

                                            Why the change?

It is a Photoshop limit. I think that Photoshop CS2 was unstable and crashed a lot if you opened too many files, so Photoshop CS3 added some open file limits to prevent the loss of user data from crashes.

If you are trying to open more than 200 files in Photoshop at once, your workflow is very broken.

If you want more details, please move this thread to the main Photoshop forum, since it has nothing to do with Camera Raw.

With the new sharpening versus noise filters, I was hoping ACR4+ would have sharpening/noise defaults relative to the camera's ISO setting(?) Any thoughts?

                                                cheerios :)

I installed the new version in both cs3 and elements 5. The sharpening tool only displays the results when the display is set at 100%. In other words I can't see the effects when the display is showing less than 100%, but when I open the image it shows the results.

What am I missing or doing wrong?

                                                    Michael,

It seems to me that this would be an excellent situation to save specific subsets to accommodate the different ISO settings. Every camera is a little different, and so are shooting styles.

Yeah...I think you should check out Camera Raw 4.x's preference setting where you can change the CR "Defaults" to make the default respect both the camera serial number _AND_ the camera ISO...

It's always useful to make sure what you are asking for isn't already there...

I was opening raw files, using Photoshop's File > Open dialogue. I expected them to open in ACR 4.1.

(Actually - I was only testing the limit! I would normally use something like Edit > Develop Settings > Previous Conversion to handle lots at a time).

I now see that Bridge and Photoshop apply different rules when opening raw files in ACR. Bridge was happy to open 425 of them directly in ACR 4.1, so it isn't an ACR limit after all.

(I now use Lightroom for that sort of thing instead!)

I tried dowloading the 4.1 update but Photoshop CS3 says it can't recognize the plug in.
All I'm doing is double-clicking it to install it. I could drag it into a plug-in folder in Photoshop but since I can't find camera raw anywhere I'm afraid I'll put it in the wrong place.

Is there a procedure I should be following to properly install this plug in?

(My apologies for obviously being a new Photoshop user!)

The ability to use the Option Key to see the effects on the Luminance is amazing! It helps to make sense of the Sharpening sliders in particular. I have simply followed recommended formulas for Sharpening up to this point. Now I can actually see how it works. The Edge Mask is wowing me. I'm also interested in Clarity. I haven't got far enough in the article to grasp it tonight, but played with it on one of my recent Boston photos and can see it working.

I am speechless! All I can say is that from where I sit, those of you who make these wonderful tools have to be gifted by God!

I've just opened some earlier images that had the problems of specular highlights, and some flare, on a very sunny day. They tended to get some purple fringing too.

The defringing does a good enough job on the PF - very welcome.

A bit unexpected, to me, was the improvement I got using Clarity. The effect was to get the lost contrast as a result of the flare under control - it was as though the flare was being reduced, and features partly "masked" by the flare became stronger.

Perhaps this was expected by others - but I thought it was going to be most useful on mid-tones rather these lighter areas. It is worth a bit of experimenting. In one case I had previously resorted to correcting the problem in Photoshop, but Clarity would have reduced (perhaps not eliminated) the need for that.

The one on the Basic tab was for those of us that processed our Raw images by first removing the color then setting the sliders to get a great looking grayscale and then adding back the color. The one on the HSL/Grayscale tab was for the actual conversion to Black and White as the finished product.
