Finally, you should try posting in the Lightroom forum.
I'm using Windows XP pro SP2. I'll take your advice re LR forum since the problem clearly is related to some preset in LR - everything worked fine previously, and LR itself seems to work fine. I thought I may have a problem with xmp sidecar files but my understanding is that this should not be an issue with DNG - part of the reason for using it.
I don't know if you are going to check back here in this forum again. But I think you will find it necessary to export copies of your images and then open to those copies in order to see your Lightroom adjustments.

When settings are not automatically written to XMP (or DNG) files, you need
to manually do this. Select all the relevant images in LR and do Control-S
(or Command-S if I recall correctly on the Mac) to save the changes to your
You can enable automatic writing in the Preferences dialog.

Thanks Kees and Jim
I have already tried Ctrl-S and enabling automatically writing settings to xmp. It seems to make no difference.
I have deliberately avoided exporting copies as a solution so far because I am trying to archive my dngs with their settings but have each piece of software see the same file version. To this end, I import into LR leaving the files in original location With backups, I am already at 3 Tb storage and the prospect of copying every file is daunting.
Perhaps the workflow is not as simple as I envisioned with LR.
Some of the functions of Lightroom cannot be duplicated by ACR 3.7, you'd need to use PS CS3 and ACR 4.3 to have matching features. As for Iview, isn't it a problem that the jpeg thumbnail of the file not being updated?
You have a miscompare in Camera Raw versions which I believe is causing your problem (ie not backward compatible).
I experienced this between 4.2 and 4.3 using PS CS3 (4.3) and seeing the photo in PSE6.0 Organizer (4.2). I have updated PSE to account for same ACR version which fixed the problem. However, in order for me to fix the thumbnail, I need to re-import the file.
