This happens to me occasionally, and I haven't figured out any consistent reason to explain why. Sometimes the problem will resolve itself eventually. You might try using the File/Open As option in Photoshop and select camera raw as the file type, and then choose your TIF file. That might work.
Maybe by the time CS4 is released some of these little quirks will get resolved.
I have that problem in Bridge from time to time, but purging the cache for the
folder fixes it.
Yes, that solution sometimes will work for me. But other times it doesn't. Maybe it's because I have an older computer.
I found one solution in an old thread from last fall but it doesnt work in all cases. When I change a TIF to a grayscale via desaturation, ACR could not open it again no matter what piece of advice I followed.
Did you change the mode to grayscale or did you leave it as a RGB file??
