Compression, etc. with ACR (A question of principle - from a Newbie)

I have been struggling to find a definitive answer to this question, and am hoping that someone will be able to help.

I understand how in Photoshop data loss occurs through compression when operations such as applying curves are performed, and gaps in data (leading to posterization) can occur when the tonal range is expanded.

Am I correct in believing that, by applying the adjustments as part of the conversion process, ACR is able to transfer to Photoshop smooth, fully-populated histograms (ie. without doubled-up levels / gaps in levels) when adjustments (such as Exposure, Fill Light, Blacks, Brightness, Contrasts, Clarity, Vibrance, Saturation and Tone Curve Adjustments) are made within ACR?
