    FM 9 patch available

    Seanb_us Community Member
There's a FrameMaker 9.0.1 patch available if you run Help > Updates. This will patch FrameMaker 9 up to 9.0p230. There's a couple of fixes in there for CMYK PDFs.

      Cheers,

      SEan

Is there a list of fixed bugs? If yes, where?

            Fridolin.

Dov Isaacs from Adobe posted this on the Free Framers list (Free Framers is provided by OmSys, makers of the highly esteemed MIF2Go, see:

              http://www.omsys.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/list/framers

List of major issues resolved in this update (from the "readme"):

              1. (Ref‐ 1838069): Type‐ahead functionality of Control key shortcuts (Ctrl+0 to Ctrl+9) does not work. However the following are the changes from legacy behavior (which are not fixed) :

              2274062
Search in type‐ahead area doesn't auto‐start if the next chars match with another
              tag name

              2273267
When focus is on type‐ahead area, with a tag displayed in it, clicking in the document
applies that displayed tag. So, one should use ESC key to exit from the status
              bars type‐ahead area.

              2. (Ref‐ 1884451): When the starting letter is pressed the fly‐out menu of the status bar applies the value automatically if there is a SINGLE entry

              3. (Ref ‐ 2252804): Inability to control index "see" characteristics with DITA indexterms
The user shall now be able to configure the following things about the index see & see‐also features of DITA v1.1:

? The text that shall be used for DITA index see/see‐also keywords. By default it shall be See and See Also respectively.

? The character format to be used for displaying DITA index see/see‐also text. By default it shall be Emphasis for both.

These can be configured by using the following entries in the ditafm.ini file:

              SeeString=See
              SeeAlsoString=See Also
              SeeCharFmt=Emphasis
              SeeAlsoCharFmt=Emphasis
Earlier these strings & the character formats were imposed by FrameMaker itself. The user had no mechanism to modify these at the time of importing a DITA document.

              4. (Ref ? 2248303): Dita val filter is not working correctly if we have conditional text applied on some elements
Following issues related to DITA filtering feature have been identified & fixed corresponding to this bug:

? DITAVAL filter incorrect for "Gen Compound FM document" with a tag (in Show) applied to a content to be filtered.

? DITAVAL filter incorrect for "Gen FM book with FM components" with a tag (in Show) applied to a content to be filtered.

? DITAVAL filter incorrect for "Gen Compound FM document" with a tag (in Hide) applied to a content NOT to be filtered.

              5. (Ref‐ 2268619): Save As CMYK PDF ‐ imported PDFs are rendered as RGB previews only.

              6. (Ref‐ 2273344): FrameMaker crashes if a wrong file name is given in browse dialog while inserting a new topicref (using element catalog) in a Map/BookMap file.

              7. (Ref‐ 1930191): The Para designer panel gets updated even when it is in minimized mode.

              8. (Ref ? 2253035): Incorrect messages appear in XML Schema Log while using German Locale.

              9. (Ref ‐ 2251492 ) :Graphics imported by copy are getting dropped in CMYK PDF if ConvertGraphicsToEPS flag is On in maker.ini and a RGB PDF is created before creating the PDF.

              10. (Ref ? 2284304) : File‐>preferences‐>interface‐ > Hide Panel on Close ,should be checked OFF by default.
This preference was ON by default in 9.0 making the panels stay open in the background resulting in slow speed of the system. Now with this fix, the make.ini in the installation directory will have "HidePanelsOnClose=Off" entry. Pls. note that if old maker.ini is already present in the user area, one needs to manually make "HidePanelsOnClose=Off" in it. If no maker.ini is present in user area, FrameMaker will create one on the first launch automatically

The patch also installs a PDF that tells the fixes into your Adobe FrameMaker 9 main directory.

                Cheers.

Apparently, there is a minor issue (like, it's not working) with the Command button in the designers with this patch. Here's a workaround from Adobe:

                  *****************

                  a) Make sure Hide Panels on Close if OFF in File->Preferences->Interface dialog (once we do this, this setting persists for all subsequent FM session)

                  b) Close Para/Character/Table Designer once and reopen. This will fix the issue. (need to be done once for FM session)

                  ****************

                    Hi,
I have now tried the "save as PDF" command for creating CMYK pdf, and this is really a great news for us. But the problem is that it still has some bugs - even with the patch installed. The Cmyk option does not send all fonts over to the pdf file, which is really bad. If the "convert to RGB" is checked the pdf is correct, with all fonts embedded.

This does not happend with all fonts. But "TimesNewRoman PS" and "ITC Frankling Gothic Demi" does not work with cmyk, but is correct in RGB.

                    Why?

                      Hans,

I tested with those same fonts and am NOT seeing the same problem. All
of the fonts are properly embedded in the resulting PDF I get.

Note: FM does not actually embed the fonts into the intermediate
postscript file, it just inserts a reference to these. It is then up
to Distiller to find the appropriate fonts and then embed them.
Distiller only looks for fonts in the folders that it has been told to
look in and ignores all system settings.

Have you verified that those fonts are located where Distiller knows
                      about it?

Are you using the exact same joboptions file for Distiller when
                      creating the different PDFs?

What other settings do you have enabled, bookmarks, tagged PDF, Named
destinations for all paragraphs? Note: for CMYK PDFs (which are
destined for print), you should not have any of these options enabled.

                        Hi Arnis

My Distiller has several references to fonts on my Computer, so this should not be the problem. I am using Suitcase, but my collegaue uses ATM and has the same problem.

All the boxes are un-checked regarding bookmarks, tags and links, and I am using the same distiller job.

The only difference is the "convert CMYK colors to RGB" checkbox. When I check this box, all of my fonts are embedded in the pdf file, but when I uncheck this box, which is "the big news" for us in 9.0p230, some fonts just drops out.

                          Hans,

Have you applied the Microsoft hotfix for FrameMaker as described
                          here:
                          http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2008/07/hotfix_for_framemaker_1.html

This does address drop out issues in PDFs.

                            Hi,

This does not seem to work on 9.0p230. Any other ideas how to create a new character format?

                            Best regards,

                            Mats

                              Mats,

You can also do it, as in earlier FM versions, through the Character Designer. Select some text to apply the format to, enter the attributes that you want in the designer (after using shift+F8 to set all to AsIs), enter the name of the format and then click Apply.

FM will then prompt you if you want to add this as a new format to the catalog and apply it to the selected text.

Same technique works for the paragraph designer as well.
