1. Re: Need to wrap type on bottle (cylindrical shape)
JETalmage Oct 17, 2008 1:55 PM (in response to alan ruta)Several approaches, the best of which depends upon the specific situation:
Envelope Distort.
Warp Effect.
Create a Symbol and then use 3D Effect to map the Symbol to the cylindrical surface.
Create a Text On A Path object, using an elliptical path and the Skew alignment option.

Wade S Zimmerman Oct 17, 2008 1:59 PM (in response to alan ruta)You can make a cylinder with the 3D effect and map the text to the surface of the cylinder and give it a geometry with no visibility and then position it on top of the bottle. <br /> <br />Or just use the 3D effect if you can. <br /> <br /> <a href="http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=17CnHhBhK3XGAXp8ehYk8ke3M9TtqL" /></a> <img alt="Picture hosted by Pixentral" src="http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/17CnHhBhK3XGAXp8ehYk8ke3M9TtqL_thumb.jpg" border="0" /> -
3. Re: Need to wrap type on bottle (cylindrical shape)
Tim Donahue Oct 17, 2008 2:13 PM (in response to alan ruta)You could use the 3D effect from the effect menu. The first thing to do is to create the "label" by putting your text and any graphics together the way you want them to appear. Then with the label selected go to the Symbols palette and click and hold the right side of the palette until you see a pull down menu. Go to "new symbol". This should add you label to the list of available symbols.
Next, draw Half of your bottle shape. Go to the effect menu and pull down to 3D > revolve. Check the preview box. Set the revolve angle to 360. select Right Edge or Left Edge depending on how you drew your profile. When you have your bottle looking the way you want it, go to the "Map Art" button. On the top right, you'll see a "Surface" selector. Click through the arrows until you find the surface you want to put your label on. On the upper left, you'll see a Symbol pull-down menu. Click and pull down until you see your symbol. When you select your symbol, you'll see it appear on your previewed art. You can then move it around and scale it until it looks right.
Hope this helps. -
4. Re: Need to wrap type on bottle (cylindrical shape)
alan ruta Oct 20, 2008 9:05 AM (in response to alan ruta)That's pretty much what I would up doing. I brought my photoshop bottle into ai so the cylinder I drew closely matched, then I mapped the type.
I didn't realize illustrator had such 3d tools (rotate and extude is pretty much all you need).

5. Re: Need to wrap type on bottle (cylindrical shape)
alan ruta Oct 20, 2008 11:14 AM (in response to alan ruta)My only problem is I had to bring the model and mapped text into ps as paths, then I deleted the model. I couldn't select the mapped/warped type. Its not that big a deal but it would be nice if I could just grab the type. I also tried making the model null but it nulled everything.

6. Re: Need to wrap type on bottle (cylindrical shape)
Wade S Zimmerman Oct 20, 2008 3:59 PM (in response to alan ruta)I agree there should be a real 3D space in AI so you can do this directly in AI without the need to go to photoshop.
I as not aware you were working with a model but for other peoples needs they ight need a little more.
I am glad this worked out. there are however many times with the 3D effect that you have make two or three objects to actually end up with one.
Try making a shirt button. -

The 3D Effect Map Art dialog has a checbox, Invisible Geometry. Turn that on and the model surface will be hidden, so that only the mapped Symbol is visible. You can then copy/paste that into PS, without the artwork of the surface object.

alan ruta Oct 21, 2008 5:36 AM (in response to alan ruta)Oh yeah,
many thanks James, et. al.
A button eh? Yes I know a bit about 3D. Simple shapes are so so so easy, but as soon as you ad the least bit of irregularity, fuggedaboudit.
There is a reason why as animated movies get more and more sophisticated you see improvement in facial expressions, yet furniture, even cars have been great for a long time.

11. Re: Need to wrap type on bottle (cylindrical shape)
Wade S Zimmerman Oct 21, 2008 7:36 PM (in response to alan ruta)BTW if you put your text or label on a layer above your 3D model layer in Photoshop and merge down then that will wrap the text to the model as well. -
12. Re: Need to wrap type on bottle (cylindrical shape)
alan ruta Oct 22, 2008 6:39 AM (in response to alan ruta)Wait wait: I've been importing my mapped type into photoshop as a layer. Is CS3 Extended needed for what you are saying?
Can you bring a 3D model into cs3 photoshop?

13. Re: Need to wrap type on bottle (cylindrical shape)
JETalmage Oct 22, 2008 9:28 AM (in response to alan ruta)Alan,
You don't need Photoshop Extended for the procedure explained.
Just proceed as you were. Use 3D Effect in Illustrator to map your Symbol label to the surface of a cylinder. Use the Invisible Geometry checkbox. Then copy the artwork and paste it into your Photoshop image of the bottle. Select Paste as Pixels. Before deselecting it, scale it and position it to fit the image of the bottle. Then doubleClick it to commit. The label is on its own Layer.
