1. Re: AI CS3, stroke cannot be placed on inside or outside of path
Steve Fairbairn Jan 7, 2009 8:40 AM (in response to Michael Brown12)Strange. I'm on CS2 and everything works perfectly. But why have you released the compounds? If you do that you will have to align each path of an O separately - outside on the outer path and inside on the inner path. I don't see the point.
Have you checked that all paths are closed? Path alignment only works on closed paths. -

rcraighead Jan 7, 2009 8:44 AM (in response to Michael Brown12)Was there a specific reason you outlined the text? Regular text can be stroked and filled as well (use the Appearance Panel to edit them). Why did you get rid of the compound paths? Were they causing a problem? If you outline the text I'd suggest leaving it in the group, with the compound paths intact, then target the group and assign strokes and fills as needed. Move the stroke behind the "content" if the individual characters have a fill. -
3. Re: AI CS3, stroke cannot be placed on inside or outside of path
Michael Brown12 Jan 7, 2009 9:09 AM (in response to Michael Brown12)I'm not sure how it matters, but I outlined the text to minimize my vendor's cutting it. I removed the compound paths as a test because I thought that might be the problem. Originally I did leave the text in a group and set the strokes globally. That's when I noticed that some worked and some didn't. Thus, I ungrouped it to try to set the stroke individually as well as to see if they had different attributes.
I assume all the paths are closed, but how do you tell? I don't see where it says they are closed in any info panel (as it does in my CAD software.)

Wade S Zimmerman Jan 7, 2009 9:42 AM (in response to Michael Brown12)I have CS 4 running and if one outlines the text it works as expected. But I would leave the <br /> <br />I have CS3 on a different boot and will try it there as well. <br /> <br />tried it in CS3 worked fine. <br /> <br /> <a href="http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1zVktd1kDe6zhaLVxvZMUCDv3D7JQ" /></a> <img alt="Picture hosted by Pixentral" src="http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1zVktd1kDe6zhaLVxvZMUCDv3D7JQ_thumb.png" border="0" /> -
5. Re: AI CS3, stroke cannot be placed on inside or outside of path
Michael Brown12 Jan 7, 2009 10:25 AM (in response to Michael Brown12)Hmmm...it might be a problem with my font; it might be leaving some of the curved the paths "open," although I don't know why Adobe would cripple a tool in that way. Why would they assume no one would ever want to alter the stroke on an open path? In that case it would be more of a top, middle or bottom choice, but I can certainly see times when I'd use it, map borders, for instance. How does one "close" a path?
Thanks,

6. Re: AI CS3, stroke cannot be placed on inside or outside of path
Wade S Zimmerman Jan 7, 2009 8:33 PM (in response to Michael Brown12)That is a different issue and yes I think it was an oversight to some degree. -
7. Re: AI CS3, stroke cannot be placed on inside or outside of path
Steve Fairbairn Jan 8, 2009 2:52 AM (in response to Michael Brown12)To find if there are any open paths you can do two things. Either check each anchor point manually with the direct selection tool (click on a point and drag it a bit to see if it separates from itself, join if necessary). Or select a character that's not behaving itself and use Pathfinder to unite it.
