Generally, if you resize a pic using css, that always gives a bad quality result. I've never tried anything other than ImageMagick for such purposes, but maybe you could try using flash/flex/as3 for resizing - AIR supports it and it might give decent results..
I stumbled upon this link that might be of some use:
Thanks for the suggestion zorglub76. Perhaps I could find a solution resizing the image in actionscript, but then I'm stuck with another problem, which is how to take an image I've manipulated in AS3 and render it in the html img tag? I'm dynamically pulling images from amazon, so I can't resize them ahead of time.
As far as the css goes, I don't believe that's the problem. When I take the same html + css and render it in chrome, firefox, or safari the smaller image looks great. It's only a problem in adobe air, and I believe it has to do with it not being anti-aliased.
Any luck with the resizing? I am also looking to resize an image in a js/html/air app. My app is using css to downsize the display of images and they look fine. I need to downsize jpg's to use the YUI ImageCropper, which does not support scaled images.
@Paul - No luck yet. I'm ignoring the issue at the moment, hoping for an answer shows up on this thread :)
