If you are saving for the web, there HAS to be something there other than a space. You can put an underscore there, or a dash, or no space at all, but there can't be a space. Anything that's used on the web is connected without spaces, otherwise browsers can't handle the file.
In the bigger picture, I don't understand why it's a problem in the first place...

luciele Dec 6, 2007 10:35 AM (in response to luciele)Hi Bert,
Thanks for your reply. It's bugging me because I don't like having hyphens between words when I don't want or haven't asked for them :-)
As for having to have something between the words to use them on the Web, I'm not at that stage yet.
As for why it's creating a problem, right now I'm saving the .png's for my personal tests and for presentation purposes. The file names I use are explanatory and can be long, and if I have to rename them in Explorer for whatever reason, it's annoying because it means that each time I retype a file name I have to add hyphens between the words to make sure there are not 2 files with the same name in the same folder; i.e. "blue-grey" and "blue grey". (I think you'll agree that we all have our own ways of working, and what might be a problem for me might not be for you :-) )
If it's not possible to save them in Save to Web without something between the words, how would I go about having underscores instead of hyphens? (I prefer underscores.. :-) )
Thanks very much. -

Save for Web merely derives file names from your work file, whether .ai, .psd, etc. Put the underscores in your file names in the first place, and you won't have this "problem." -

luciele Dec 6, 2007 11:31 AM (in response to luciele)Hi Harron,
I can manually insert the underscores when naming the files, but I'm wondering if there's a way for Illustrator to automatically insert underscores once the file is saved, instead of automatically inserting hyphens as it's doing right now?
Thanks. -
5. Re: Trying to not have hyphens between words when saving files
Harron K. Appleman Dec 6, 2007 11:38 AM (in response to luciele)I'm not aware of such a feature, at least up through v12, LucieL.
You could use a batch file renaming utility, such as ARen or PC Magazine's MultiRen, after the fact. -

From Save for Web, at the top right there's a little context menu button, which will give you the option to edit output settings, and in that dialog you can add whatever you want to the filename...

Harron K. Appleman Dec 6, 2007 1:15 PM (in response to luciele)Ahhh...
I'd forgotten about the output settings dialog.
For AI 12 users, after hitting 'Save' in SFW, you can access file naming (and other output) options by selecting 'Others...' from the 'Settings' dropdown menu in the save dialog. You can save your settings for future recall.
In AI 10, after hitting 'Save' in SFW, you can simply hit the 'Output Settings' button in the save dialog.
My bad for forgetting about that feature, and thank you, Bert, for jogging my memory.
However, unless this feature has been improved in AI 13, I'm not certain you can use it to accomplish what LucieL wants to do. All you can do in AI 10 and 12 is specify the separators for filenames that are used for multiple slices, triggers, rollover states, etc. You can't change AI's use of hyphens in the main document name. -

luciele Dec 6, 2007 1:18 PM (in response to luciele)Hi Bert,
That's exactly the dialog box I've been playing around with but with no success as of yet. I'll keep on trying :-)
Thanks for everyone's input. -

Bert-Bert Dec 6, 2007 1:41 PM (in response to luciele)You may have to save the settings, and in the actual SfW saving dialog box you have to pick the right one... -
10. Re: Trying to not have hyphens between words when saving files
LenHewitt Dec 7, 2007 12:20 AM (in response to luciele)Of course, if you uncheck Unix and Mac Compatibility in the Edit Output
Settings d/box, SFW won't add anything to your filename. Spaces will be
retained as spaces. -

luciele Dec 7, 2007 6:26 AM (in response to luciele)Bingo! Thank you Len! I had already unchecked Mac compatibility, but not Unix. Unchecking Unix as well, and saving the settings as Bert suggested, has done the trick. No more annoying (well, to me anyway...) hyphens!
Thanks for everybody's help. -

Hi,
I'm having a similar problem. I don't have spaces in my filename but when I save for web, my filename gets truncated to 30 characters.
Is there a way to set the DEFAULT to Mac & Unix unchecked because I don't want to be selecting a saved output setting everytime I save for web.
Regards

Not sure why you're saying that files on the web can't have spaces - it's simply not true (and wasn't back in 2007 either). Some of use are picky regarding how our file names look. For instance, I prefer title case with spaces. There's no reason we should have to use underscores or hyphens in our file names, or lower case names. Some file systems are case sensitive so there are certain times it makes sense to use all lower case, for example, when naming files. But spaces? The web can handle spaces just fine.
