1. Re: huge file 1200 dpi comes in half corrupt in preview--any fix?
Scott Falkner Sep 29, 2008 12:37 PM (in response to alan ruta)You should refer to an image's resolution in PPI, for Pixels Per Inch, not DPI. Dots are what printers make. DPI, or Dots Per Inch, is the hardware-based output resolution of a printer or imagesetter and has no connection to an image's resolution.
So let's assume you mean PPI where you enter DPI.
When you say...
>when I scale up to 1200 dpi
Do you mean that you are resampling the 900 ppi image to 1200 ppi? You sould know that this will not improve the appearance of the image. All you are doing is stretching the image. Unless you're using a third-party plug in like Genuine Fractals you aren't doing anything worthwhile to the image.
>The client wants 1200 dpi for reasons I'll skip for now
If you tell us why the client want 1200 ppi resolution (I have a guess and it rhymes with "Big Florence") then we can help you arrive at a solution that works and meets your clients true needs.
As for the rendering problem in InDesign, you need to provide more information. What is the size of the image, in pixels? What format are you using? What colour mode are you using? What versions of InDesign and Photoshop are you using? -
2. Re: huge file 1200 dpi comes in half corrupt in preview--any fix?
alan ruta Sep 29, 2008 12:58 PM (in response to alan ruta)I meant 1200 dpi. I'm not in control of this situation. If I was I'd speak directly to the client and 'splain them what is what.
That being the case I'm compelled to give them 1200ppi if I can. These files will be printed humongous, like 100 feet high type thing, in Dubai or some god forsaken place so the best thing would be a solution to placing a 1200 ppi image into ID (at 100 percent).

Tony Morse Sep 30, 2008 8:51 PM (in response to alan ruta)Wow. 100 feet high, huh? Does your client know that most large format printing like that is done at 36 ppi or sometimes even less? -
4. Re: huge file 1200 dpi comes in half corrupt in preview--any fix?
alan ruta Oct 1, 2008 6:00 AM (in response to alan ruta)It might be more like 30 or 40 feet, big fer sure.
The problem is I'm not the one 'splaining things to the client. Some people are just afraid to to that and my superior in this case doesn't, won't or can't. Either way I'm supposed to bring these files in at 1200ppi. It gets beyond the 30,000 pixel dimension for most of the files and that is when I most often get the corruption.
In the end its all so stupid because 1: it would come out just as well to let the rip to the rez up and 2: I wound up doing most of the files at 600ppi (usually about 1 to 1-1/2 gb) anyway. I pretty much just wasted the day rezzing up the 1200 and then using the 600ppi anyway.
I'm paid by the hour.
