My understanding is that you are trying to modify the existing Styles. Such an operation is valid and will be available under the Current Document option in the drop down menu in Styles panel.
This new style created will be present in the present document only. To create this asset as a re-usable one, select the styles and use the option "Save Style Library" in the panel menu. Once done, a new library will be created containing the styles within it.
If none of the styles are selected, then all the styles in the current document will be saved in the library file.
but how do i change the color of the asset precisely? i know i can use the saturation or hue slide bar to change the color a bit, but i can't get the exact color i want. and when i try an mess with the gradients i end up changing the original glassy effect of the asset. for example there is a dark blue/lighter blue glassy/glossy asset style. i want to make it into a navigation bar, but i need it to be bright red, and another copy bright pink, but when i slide the hue or saturation slide bar i can't seem to get the right color. does any of this make any sense? =) thanks
When a style is applied to any object, the Properties panel at the bottom will reflect the attributes which are editable in that applied style. The properties which can be edited are fill and stroke colors also apart from adjusting the Hue and Saturation.
Gradient colors can be modified by changing the fill color. The nodes in the gradient will change the color from blue to black or any other intended color of change. If you know the color you can either enter it as a 6 digit value or you can pick a color from an existing object.
Hope it helps. Let me know I am missing you query completely.
i understand what you are explaining, but i was looking for a simple way to modify a default style, but after i go in an modify the 4 or 5 filter effects and change the 4 or 5 gradient nodes then the style doesn't look like the original. i just thought there was a simple way to change the color scheme in fireworks. thank you very much for your help.
I am kind of getting what you are referring to but at the moment I dont think there is a quick way to do it. I personally feel that this workflow provides with better flexibility to a designer.
