You can create a background movieclip that has a couple of frames with a differently colored rectangular shape in each and switch it as needed between the frames via the button code.
I've done this by simple placing an object (colored square clip) on the bottom most depth (just on top of the background layer) of the .swf. Then I can either change the clip's alpha or its visibility to show or hide it.
myBackground_mc._visible=true; (or false)
myBackground_mc._alpha=0; (or 100)
...always worked for me
