Retain character formatting in index entries

I would like to see italicized words that are marked in the text as index entries be able to retain their formatting. With sub-entries, I found a work-around by enclosing the text in <>, then using a GREP Find and Change to italicize what was between the brackets (after generating the index). Unfortunately, if you place <> in main entries, the topic is pushed to the Symbols area and must then be manually inserted in alphabetic order after you generate the index. I'm not sure why the sub-entries remain in alphabetic order, but at least that does allow for the GREP solution. Even clunky old MS Word retains the formatting for index entries -- bold, italics, bold italics -- but not ID, which usually does things so much better.

A little embarrassed -- I found a work-around for the main entries. Having placed <> around the main entry, in the "Sort by" column I placed the same entry without the <>. It then is placed in correct alphabetical order when I generate the index, after which I use the GREP Find and Change to italicize the entries (and sub-entries). It still would be nice to retain formatting when you tag the index entries in the main body, but I can survive as is.
