If you have a variety of default files with more than a few default settings, you might consider creating a sample of each, and saving them as templates stored in a folder that's easy to get to, like on the Desktop, Windows Start Bar, or Macintosh Dock. You can launch these files with a double click.
The possible advantage vs. scripting is that you can create and modify the many subtile and complex template file properties without knowing how to script them.
