1. Re: Link Status Indicators
BigJohnD Nov 18, 2008 3:28 PM (in response to Carole Caruso)ISTR it's to do with the way PM compresses TIFF images when storing them.
The images may suffer from a colour shift on screen but will print OK as the uncompressed image is used when printing.

2. Re: Link Status Indicators
Carole Caruso Nov 18, 2008 4:24 PM (in response to Carole Caruso)I answered my own question after I sent it. However, have another.
Where oh where in the Help or in the manual does it say how to Place a graphic and link it? Somewhere I read to hold down ctrl-alt for about 5 seconds and then place. I do this and the graphic is linked and the file is named John_D.tif. And the linked file is smaller than the original.
However, sometimes I just lose it and hold down ctrl-shift instead. This is when I get John_U.tif and both the original file and the linked file are the same size.
But - how do I know how to link? Where is it written?
Thanks.

Check out the FAQs:

You can uncheck "store copy in publication" under Element -> Link Options with no publication open to set it as a global default.

4. Re: Link Status Indicators
Carole Caruso Nov 19, 2008 4:32 PM (in response to Carole Caruso)Thanks,John. The problem seems to be that I was searching for how to link files when what I am really doing is compressing the tif file at the same time I link it. The instructions for compressing a file and linking a file are in two different places in the manual.
Sigh.
Thanks for your help.

BigJohnD Nov 19, 2008 4:40 PM (in response to Carole Caruso)If you don't embed a copy of the image in publication, your PM files will be smaller, avoid any compression issues and be less prone to corruption.

Carole Caruso Nov 22, 2008 12:59 PM (in response to Carole Caruso)I take it that every time you Place and link a graphic file, the publication file balloons up. No matter what else you do, right?
And, yes, I am storing the publication and the linked files in the same folder. And I am saving as Save Smaller. And I am saving the files as Save As.
I think I am doing everything I can possibly do to keep the file smaller.
But every time a linked graphic goes in, up goes the size of the publication file.
I find this confusing. But I am living with it.

Load up PM but do not open any publication.
Click Elements -> Link Options.
Set then set the default options like this and click OK.
