Ah, thanks once again John. This is a strange failing of PM. Who includes the cover, contents, and introduction in the numbering? Must have been a Friday job.

Seriously...get with the program here. PM is dead for a reason.
>PM is dead for a reason.
Well, I would have thought that would be a simple enough thing to cure. No reason for Adobe to dump PM and create a new programme i.e. ID. That's what upgrades are for. Anyway, that's another story, perhaps there was something fundamentally wrong with it.
I am just an amateur, but I tried changing the starting page number to 5 in the document setup box, and all works fine when I print out in pdf. So it works with my PM65. Am I missing something here?
After working with PM65 for many, many hours, I have learned two things, carved in stone:
The manual tells you to do this. Believe it!
There was a very good reason...PM's code was such a mess that it
couldn't be upgraded. That is not conjecture, either; it's fact.
Adobe bought Aldus, not to get PM, but to get a new program they were
developing, a program that came to be called InDesign.
Ah Rob, so there is something fundamentally wrong with it. Now that's a reason. I didn't know Aldus had started the development of the programme that then became ID.
Anyway, Carole, I have PM7 and I've tried it again and the same happens. Any number that I type into the Start Page Number box is then the number that page 1 starts with. If I type in 5, then page one starts as 5 (and who wants the cover given a page number anyway?), and also PM's own numbering of the document pages starts as numbering page 1 as page 5 aswell, which makes the page numbering system next to useless, unless you split the document up as suggested in the solutions suggested in John's link above.
What I want of course is for page 5 to start as page 1.
Also I've noticed that you can't bring the page numbers to the front either. They are always at the back, which means I've got to transport virtually the whole page layout onto the master page, and I might not want that on every page.
