ssprengel Oct 14, 2008 7:00 AM (in response to hrh gracie)Besides in the filter bar, above, which you can toggle on and off with the \ or View / Filter Bar, the star ratings are also along the button, above the thumbnail strip if you click on the word Filter to cycle through the choices it shows.
Regarding performance, I have a 1GB 2.4GHz machine with 20,000 images since July and reading metadata from XMP files was slow like you're seeing if I produced the XMP files with GeoSetter / EXIFtool before my first import and tried to import when the XMP already existed, but things are reasonably speedy if I import first, then create the XMP metadata with GeoSetter, then Save Metadata (which adds the LR metadata to the XMP that GeoSetter produced) and Read Metadata (which reads the combined LR and GeoSetter metadata into the LR catalog). BTW, I have Automatically write changes to XMP turned off.
What situation do you have where you need to read the metadata of your entire catalog? Is this a LR 1.4x catalog, or are there XMPs produced with ACR? In my case, LR seemed to choke on the XMPs produced by EXIFtool, which contain the metapacket wrapper that LR, itself, does not put on XMP files for some reason. I posted something online abou this, and got one response from someone who uses GeoSetter the say I do and said his imports were fast, so it's obviously not a universal problem, which makes it harder for Adobe to understand and address. -
3. Re: LR 2 rating search and performance?
hrh gracie Oct 15, 2008 4:03 AM (in response to hrh gracie)I was reading the metadata because when I reloaded the catalog, I created a copyright statement... AND, all the boxes were checked, so the ratings and labels got clobbered..... After the 20+ hour recreation I had to go back to the catalog backup and WRITE all the labels and rating back to the images. Then I had to reread them all into the new catalog......
Unfortunately, I created thenew catalog in the (forlorn, and apparently unfounded) hope that it would be both smaller (which it's not) and perform better, which it definitely doesn't.....
It's too bad since the product has good points, but the slowness navigating, going into Develop, making adjustments, etc makes it painful to use. -
