    Cache changes?

    hrh gracie Community Member
      Running 2.2 on XP32.

My cache is on a separate spindle from the images, catalog, application, O/S.

In preferences I allocated 15GB to cache, and there are currently 1529 files, using 14.9GB. But, there are also new directories 256, 1024, and full, that have many files in them.

Is there anything I should do to optimize the caching to improve performance? More space? Less space? How often should I do an "Optimize and relaunch"?

I'd trash the whole thing at this point! Start afresh. I don't know if there's an optimum size for your O/S, or mine for that matter.

Been there, tried that. Unfortunately, it takes FOREVER to rebuild a catalog - at LEAST a day and a half. And the last time I did it (using 2.1) the thing started at over 500 MB and has grown back to over a GB in a month with less than a thousand new images....

No, the brute force and massive ignorance method isn't my choice in this case. There's gotta be a better way to optimize this thing.

Are you talking about the cache, or Previews, now? I wasn't recommending trashing Previews, the rebuild of which can take a long time for large collections, but the image cache, very different from Previews.

I was thinking you wanted me to trash the catalog and rebuild it. Do you just mean to delete all the cache files? I did that recently and so far LR has recreated about 300 cache files.

But my question is more about optimizing the space allocated for cache... how much is an optimal amount?

That I do not know, but figuring its optimal size is in some relationship to speed the OS has in going through the files to find what it needs, a fresh start should be beneficial. Any improvement? I doubt that setting it bigger than necessary is a problem, but there is probably a tipping point where it's too big for your O/S. If you're able and willing to perform tests, it'd be great to learn your results.
