1. Re: Moving images OUT of the Lightroom catalog.....
(metamatt) Jul 23, 2007 9:37 AM (in response to hrh gracie)> I want to get rid of 900 but not delete them OR have them stay in the directory on the disk
I don't get it, you don't want them deleted and you don't want them in that directory. You want them in another directory, or you want them in the same directory but not showing up in Lightroom?
If you want them to stay there on disk but not show up in Lightroom, invoke Photo->Delete Photo, Lightroom will ask if you also want to delete them from disk, and you can say no, just remove them from Lightroom.
If you want them moved to another folder, you can do this by dragging them to a different folder in the Folders view in Lightroom. You can also create new folders there by right-clicking existing folders, or hitting the + button in the Folders header. -

(Mike_Weis) Jul 23, 2007 11:44 AM (in response to hrh gracie)It sounds like you might want set up a temporary or "staging" folder within LR where you move your reject files (it has to be a folder as opposed to a collection because you'll need to be able to find them easily outside of LR). Once all the rejects are moved to the staging folder, delete them from LR but not from the disk. At that point you'll have to use something other than LR to manage them, Bridge, Explorer, etc. -
3. Re: Moving images OUT of the Lightroom catalog.....
hrh gracie Jul 25, 2007 5:57 AM (in response to hrh gracie)Yeah, probably explained it poorly... The images are fine, and I don't want to delete them from the system. BUT, there are so many things I can't do easily or conveniently in LR that I'm still having to use Bridge for just about EVERYTHING but adjusting the image... I want to KEEP the images so they can be reviewed by other people involved in this project (in case we need to select a different image for something) but I don't want to have them clogging up LR or Bridge.
I did what Mike Weis said and created a discard directory and imported it into LR, them moved the ones I don't want into the discard directory. Its clumsy having to have the discards in LR but it works..... -
4. Re: Moving images OUT of the Lightroom catalog.....
(Gloria_Rodriguez) Jul 25, 2007 5:32 PM (in response to hrh gracie)I have one catalog where I have imported about 4,000 photos. I just love the develop module, but I still have to learn how to organize in the Library.
-As an example, I would like to organize in this way:
Family
-Children
-Grandchildren
-Parents
Friends
-
Fotosafari's
-Towns
-Beach
-Flora
-Fauna
-etc.
Weddings
I've been reading the Help information in 1.1, but I am still confused. Can someone explain how I can do this or direct me to a clear tutorial?
**I posted another question here and have not gotten a reply. Just in case someone that reads this knows. How can I get the Impromptu Slideshow to view "Fit to Window"? It always shows 1:1 and I can't see the whole photos. Thanks!
Thanks so much! -

(Mel_Lammers) Jul 25, 2007 6:08 PM (in response to hrh gracie)Gloria,
You should be able to create a Family folder with the subfolders under it. You should do it this way [windows system]
Click on the + sign in the Folder pane --on the upper right side. Make a Glorias Photos directory for your very top directory. Drag it up to the top of the pane if necessary.
Then rt click on Glorias Photos and click on Creat a Folder as a Child of this Folder. Name it Family. Then Rt Click on Family and make a child folder called Children. Now you see how to do it. If you have photos already in the catalog, select them in the Grid and drag to the folder you want them in. They will be moved on your HDD.
Let me know if I have not been clear.
Regarding the impromptu slide show, try this: Click on Fit in the Library Grid view, then go to Impromptu Slide Show and select. Mine comes up full screen, the whole photo. -
6. Re: Moving images OUT of the Lightroom catalog.....
(Gloria_Rodriguez) Jul 26, 2007 3:58 PM (in response to hrh gracie)Mel, you were very clear! I was able to do it! Now, the thing is that I'm not sure, if I want to change the order of the photos in my HD! I have my HD very organized, more or less the way I would like it in Lightroom, but then I would be rearranging everything in my hd too.
What, if I made a new catalogue and just imported my 2007 My Pictures folder? Would I lose the metadata?
I just realized that the fotos that are too big in the impromptu slide show are the portraits. I do have them set at "fit".
Thanks so much for your help! -
7. Re: Moving images OUT of the Lightroom catalog.....
(Mike_Weis) Jul 26, 2007 5:13 PM (in response to hrh gracie)dkperez: you can delete the images from LR's catalog and keep them on your hard drive in the discard directory you created. In LR go view the discard directory, select all, press the delete key, and when prompted choose "Remove". They'll disappear from LR but will still be in the discard directory on your HD where you can work with them in Bridge or Explorer. And if you ever want them back in LR you can simply import them again. -
8. Re: Moving images OUT of the Lightroom catalog.....
(Mel_Lammers) Jul 26, 2007 5:58 PM (in response to hrh gracie)Gloria,
If you are shooting RAW, and you have saved all of the metadata "select a folder and then CTRL S in Win or Cmd S in Mac" I think it will write all of the metadata in the photos in the folder to the xmp files. If TIF, DNG, JPEG, then the metadata will be written into the photo file itself. There is some question as to which Develop metadata will be written. It should work.
If you want to be absolutely sure to have this work, open a folder, select all photos, "CTRL A" and then CTRL S. Wait until the progress bar at the top of the Library panel completes and then go to the rest, folder by folder. You could do this for "All Photos at the top of the catalog, but you might as well do it folder by folder to see progress [kind of like watching grass grow" for all at once.
If you have your HDD organized the way you want, then Import the My PIctures Folder and all sub-folders [I think that is a checkbox].
It should load them organized like you have them on the HDD. That is the way I did mine and I had 20,000+. Lots of dups that I am still weeding out as I sort for quality.
I would name your new catalog something like Glorias Photos. Holler if you get in trouble. Backup your existing catalog after you get all the metadata saved.

(Gloria_Rodriguez) Jul 26, 2007 6:24 PM (in response to hrh gracie)I am copying these instructions to notepad and this is what I will do. I think it's the perfect solution!
Thank you so much, Mel! I will be back, should I have any problems :-)
Take care!
Gloria
