    Metadata Browser Inconsistencies?

    hrh gracie Community Member
I created a catalog in LR 1.2 AND added 2484 images, from .dng files.

Keywords and all that came in fine.

BUT, 447 of the images show up with "location" values, and the 2265 show up as "Unknown Location". 2037 show up with "Unknown Country", Unknown State" and "Unknown City".......

I get NO cities or anything else below any of the "Unknown" entries.....

I don't recall putting location information in the ones that show up with locations, and selecting all the images with an "Unknown" entry, and doing a global entry of country, state, city, location in the ones that show up as "Unknown" does NOT cause the "unknown" entries to go away.....

I know this was a problem in the old versions of LR, but why is this still occurring in 1.2? And HOW do I get it to actually put something USEFUL in location? Again, I've ENTERED data in the 4, hierarchical location fields, and nothing shows up...

What's going on and how do I fix it?

I try not to look there... I hate the term "unknown". I don't always fill in the location field and never noticed the "unknown location". I fill in location if there is something else to say besides city, state and country or if it isn't in a city (very often for me).

Under unknown location (gee, I have only 10523 of them out of 15000 pictures) I don't have any "structure" either, but you can just ignore that part and go up to the country, state, etc. Maybe this category just informational.

I care more about "unknown city". It's not IN A CITY. How can it be known? Or what about countries that have no states? It's not that it isn't "known". OK, it isn't known, but it can't be known either.

Now that I'm looking at it, I'm getting enough tags in there that it almost looks useful!

I think this section needs to be thought through a bit better. And there must be a better word than "unknown".

Well, to make it even ODDER (more odd?)...

I have 63 images that say "Unknown Location". SO, I entered a location - they already had a country, state, and city value. BUT, even after entering a location, it STILL doesn't change the metadata from Unknown location to the entered value... After adding values for location I STILL have 63 images with "Unknown Location"... After writing metadata to files, STILL "Unknown Location"... Did an "Update DNG Previews", still "Unknown"...... Read metadata back in from files, still "Unknown". SHUT DOWN LR, still "Unknown"... I finally did a shutdown and optimize, and when it finally came back up the metadata was FINALLY changed...

Is there some OTHER way to tell LR to update this?

dkperez: I think you are fine. Large updates of the metadata statistics are done in background. And while you were pressing to get the update you did make the program consume time for the operations you have started and so even more slowed it down.

The numbers in the metadata browser should, I guess, be understood as asynchronously generated statistics that may well be a bit behind. So the a answer to your question about the other way to tell LR to update this is most likely "go get a coffee" ;-)
