1. Re: Performance Issue updating .dng Previews?
Lee Jay-7OQGJF Nov 3, 2007 1:14 PM (in response to hrh gracie)6-7 seconds to update and write out a new preview and metadata? Seems pretty fast to me.
It's got to render a new image from RAW for each one. That's a big CPU-intensive operation, plus a ton of IS to read and write each file. -
2. Re: Performance Issue updating .dng Previews?
hrh gracie Nov 3, 2007 5:09 PM (in response to hrh gracie)Well, y'all are most likely a lot more knowledgeable about what's going on in the update than I, but it JUST finished a few minutes ago... Yes, ALMOST 6 HOURS to update the previews on 2400 images...... AND, to make it EXTRA interesting IT FAILED ON 1054 IMAGES..... No reason for the failure, just "LIGHTROOM FAILED TO UPDATE 1054 IMAGES"..........
And this was AFTER I'd culled the images from just over 11,000 (from a moderately busy 3-week shoot) PRIOR to putting them in the catalog.... Which, in the new DAM methodology I WON'T be doing..... If it took this long to do a couple thousand files, how am I going to manage 50 or 60 THOUSAND?
Is LR just the wrong tool? Do I need to go back to iView, which is recommended by the DAM people? Or is something significant going to happen SOON to LR so it either updates a whole lot faster OR does a better job discriminating as to which images actually NEED to be updated when I throw a bunch at it? Or something?
Which STILL doesn't address the other problem - that of the bizarre handling of metadata updates... -
3. Re: Performance Issue updating .dng Previews?
Lee Jay-7OQGJF Nov 3, 2007 5:21 PM (in response to hrh gracie)LR is fundamentally different from browsers. It's a database application, and it keeps previews of each and every image. It's designed for image editing and output. If that's what you use it for, the database approach has many advantages, including speed. But if you just want to tag a bunch of files, it's a bit heavy-weight for that.
Getting your mind around this approach may take a while.
