Web Services, AIR, and domain restrictions

I have consumed web services in Flex 2 apps in the past, although my experiences there lead to building proxies served by the web server hosting my Flex app since I do not have Live Cycle. Given the often volatile nature of enterprise network environments, using crossdomain.xml files just never worked consistently when I needed to consume a web service from another enterprise resource.

Some articles on AIR, such as "Introducing the Adobe AIR security model" by Lucas Adamski, sort of lead me to believe that the web services restrictions are relaxed for desktop apps; however, the Adobe documentation on "Using WebService components" still implies the old security restrictions in all cases.

My question is whether web services run into the same consumption issues within AIR applications built with Flex 3 as they do in the browser?
