    Layered .psd in Lightroom

    hrh gracie Community Member
I'm using Lightroom. But, one of the more frustrating things has always been the non-support for viewing layered photoshop files unless I save them with maximize compatibility and pay the astronomical price in file size...

Bridge can see a layered .psd with no problem. In theory, since Lightroom came from the same company, it seems to me that it should be at LEAST as capable as Bridge, and be able to see the .psd files? I can see a third-party application like iView not having the capability to work on a .psd? Again, I KNOW I can save them with maximize capability - I don't want to incur the huge size penalty caused by saving this way (its bad enough dealing with 200MB files).

Can someone explain WHY this capability would be in Bridge and be missing from Lightroom?

kdperez: I believe what you see in Bridge is the Preview JPEG in the file.

Adobe chose to cut a lot of corners with Lightroom. They knew the market
they were aiming for and for the most part ignored what today's
photographers are doing. There is no reason at all Adobe couldn't have made
Lightroom realize that the PSD file was layered and simply generate a
flattened JPG of it for previewing. A little icon in the corner could have
let the user know that you can view it, but you can't edit it in anything
other PS. They could have done the same thing with images over 10,000 pixels
in either direction. But, no Adobe chose to go lazy.

Just because you program, Bob, doesn't mean you have a handle on the myriads of tradeoffs there are in making a product such as LR, not to mention PS. Could you perhaps make one long post of all your critiques so we don't have to see them befouling so many threads?

A clear sign that you have no idea what you are talking about.

More likely too busy putting out important fires and adding real features than dealing with something they obviously feel is low on their priorities list.

OK, just curious... Just out of curiosity, Don, why would providing a capability that already exists in Bridge be of so little importance to either Adobe, or the photographers that are using their products?

I also found out today that (and I'm fervently hoping I was told incorrectly) adjustments made in ACR from Bridge are NOT carried into Lightroom? So, if you've been using PS and/or Bridge for several years, and have adjusted hundreds or thousands of images in Photoshop ACR, this adjustment information is IGNORED by Lightroom?

I've also got several images that run into the 10K pixel limit and also won't load into Lightroom... It's not a huge deal, but its disappointing that there appears to be such a disconnect with the other Adobe photo editing products...

Oh, well, no big deal - LR back onto the shelf and back into iView for DAM.......

You were told incorrectly. I don't know how to do this in Bridge, but if you write out the xmp files, LR will read them during import.

ACR won't read those images either - it is the source of the 10,000 pixel limitation.
