Where to write the .psd file when editing?

In theory, I'm using Lightroom for asset management. Which means my raw files (.dng) are in a set of directories. My derivative files (.jpg, .psd, .tif) are stored separately. In LR, if I select a file and tell it to edit in CS3, it appears to write .psd file into the directory that holds the .dng, and which should NOT have derivative files in it. Also, I don't appear to have the option of setting the filename for the .psd - which SHOULD have a suffix denoting its status... How do I set these things in LR so I don't get garbage .psd files clogging the RAW directories?
