I think you'll find it's not actually random. It does this in PSE 3 and someone explained the logic to me, but it failed to register. I think the behaviour is odd. The trick is to select all the images you want to view [not just the first one], then they'll show up in the sequence you expect.
As per my observation, the order in the full screen slide show is 'oldest first'. If you want a specific order, you could create a pdf slide show- wherein you can chose a particular sequence of photographs in the slide show.
I think you are right... but that means that the thumbnail view by folder which is sorted by name, and the slideshow, even if you pick the series of pictures is not in the same sequence.
This worked well in V2 and is "broken" in V3.
Have you made a collection and sorted by name?
And another work-around could be that you make a collection of the images and arrange the images in the order that you want. Now you can create a slideshow of that Collection to get your desired order in the slide-show.
Maybe I am doing something wrong...
I am viewing the album by "folder location".
The thumbnails show up, sorted by file name.
So far, so good.
When I select a sequence of pictures and hit F11,
I get a slideshow sorted differently than the
thumbnail sequence (oldest to newest, I think..)
Not what I was looking for.
In V2, this seemed to work better.
How do I "sort by name"?

Create a collection. Apply it to the images in folder view [filename order]. Select the collection. Its sequence will be respected.
I actually think that F11 ought to show you images in the order that you see on the screen - whatever view you're using. But it looks like Adobe thought otherwise.
