The answer is No. From Starter Edition, you can't do a round-trip to PSE2. May I suggest, its better to move to PSE3 :) which has all of SE and PSE2 and much much more.
Thanks for your answer and I guess Adobe made a marketing decision not to provide the External Editor interface in the Starter Edition.

Yes, I agree that a move to PSE 3 makes sense for some people and brings Adobe more revenue.
However, Adobe also makes revenue from those PSE 2 copies that people have purchased retail or received with their scanners or cameras. Adobe chose to offer an upgrade price to Elements 3 for only a short time.
Why should people not get a good experience with PSA 3 SE having an interface to PSE 2 from which Adobe has earned revenue?
I observe that you can use the darg&drop method of getting a file from PSA SE 3 into PSE 3 Editor. So I guess it'd work with PSE 2 also. Not ideal, as there's no backup produced. Also, I don't think SE handles PSD files.

That does seem like a big disadvantage for people with very little computer experience. So I may have to give up on this idea - will probably still experiment a little in the classroom environment when I have access to it.
I agree with that conclusion Barb. Just wanted to make sure that you knew the options.
