CS4 Extended Google 3D Warehouse Import Failure

    Welles Goodrich Community Member
Automate > Search Google for 3D Model...

      Search field > Aeron Chair

Download the first model Aeron Chair.kmz

      Try to load it.

      Wait 10 minutes.

      Force Quit PS CS4.

Try to load it in less than 10 seconds in PS CS3 from the saved file. Success!

There's something wonky about the 3D model import capacities of PS CS4. (Wonky is a technical term... means don't work worth diddly.)

          Hi Welles,

That plug-in is for CS3 only. It also has problems running under versions of 10.5.

With CS4, you currently need to use a browser to download content from the Google 3D warehouse.

            Hi Steve,

When I tried accessing the Google 3D Warehouse from within PS CS4 it did seem to work and did download a .kmz file. The problem is the .kmz file can not be imported when it is accessed from the desktop after download. Attempting to do so gets me the Spinning Beach Ball of Death. The same file opens in seconds in PS CS3.

Just now I tried your suggestion to download directly from a browser. The file options there were just Sketchup 5 or 6 or Collada (no KMZ). As PS doesn't recognize the Sketchup format, I downloaded the Collada file, unzipped the directory and tried to load it as a new 3D layer. The SBBOD reared it's ugly head and PS CS4 eventually quit responding and had to be force quit. I launched PS CS3 and opened the same Collada file in seconds.

It is possible that something is goofy in my installation but every other aspect of PS CS4 works as advertised except for importing 3D meshes. I've had trouble with OBJ, KMZ, and DAE files. All of them opened without problem or significant delay in CS3.

I am having problems as well I open the files but I am getting invisible objects and from google warehouse the objects I have from clients open fine. I have to select different type of rendering modes in order to see the models but cannot see to paint them.

I would not have known this had Welles not posted this issue as I do not use google models though now that I see the furniture I might have use for them.

The plug in does not work for me.

                Hi Welles,

I can't say if anything about your install is off. Can you create 3D layers with 'New Shape from Layer' and New 3D Postcard from Layer? Have you found all OBJ, KMZ, and DAE files failing to load or just some (any idea if there is a pattern to the originating source for the files)?

I went and downloaded the Aeron Chair file (first of the three) and see what Wade reports. The issue here is that the file was saved using an older version of the Collada specification. The result is that the opacity value for all the materials is imported with a value of 0%. In order to get the chair to display, you have to go to each of the materials and move the opacity value up from 0%.

CS4 imports a more robust scene then CS3, which likely explains the delay and problems you are having IF it appears to be file specific. Have you tried saving out the CS3 file as PSD and opening that into CS4?

                  Steve,

Most OBJ files open just fine in PS. However I have a current fascination with XenoDream which exports OBJ files without materials, just the mesh and I can't really tell you whether normals are included or quite what is going on with them. PS CS3 could open them with no problem PS CS4 took forever unless I ran them through UVMapper.

So far in limited exploration, the Google KMZ files are giving CS4 problems. I haven't bothered with Collada format files until I tried you suggestion of accessing the Google Warehouse in a browser and it was the only available option which seemed as though it might work.

Just now I tried your suggestion of loading a model in CS3 and saving a PSD file to open in CS4. I used the Aeron Chair.kmz. It loaded just fine in CS3 but the PSD file wouldn't open in CS4 and Application Not Responding required a Force Quit to get out of it.

Here's the specific file I was using...

Thanks Steve maybe I will purchase sketch up pro and then resave the files.

I was able to display the files and they open easy enough in CS4 but getting the default solid setting to show a solid was giving me a very hard time.

Also Welles it open for me in a couple of seconds I would say your graphic card or your install or perhaps something like your preferences or a font corruption.

BTW it can hang when painting one of these models I would say that it requires a lot of resources to work with some of the 3D features.

I changed my card to a nVidia GeForced 8800 GT from the 7300 GT. That improves thigs but it still hangs.

I just thought you would like to know, i will try to reduce the Allocation I have for my memory when working with 3D models or layers and see if that improves matters.

                        Hi Welles -

I downloaded the file in your link and it opened just fine in CS4 Extended on my machine - Running Leopard 10.5.5.

                        So.......

Just thought I'd let you know it worked for me -

Thanks Nat and Wade. I wonder if maybe my installation is messed up. I'm running 10.5.5 on a 2006 MacPro 12GB RAM and an ATI X1900 XT video card. I don't want to think it is the video card because I run a number of 3D programs all of which heavily use Open GL and they all work fine. I tried running CS4 from my diagnostic user account which is pristine and still had the same problem which leaves me wondering about the PS CS4 install itself.

Well I guess I'll try a reinstall and quit blaming PS for the time being.

Perhaps the card is not supported?

They might be older programs and support an earlier version of the Open GL.

Does it support Open GL 2.0 ?

                              Problem solved...

Wade, thanks for your interest in this subject. Knowing something was probably wrong with my setup made me start serious troubleshooting rather than blaming Adobe (my apologies to them).

My video card is Open GL 2.0 and is recognized by Photoshop so that probably wasn't the issue. My tests finally devolved to reinstallation which I really wished to avoid as I have dozens of plugins and so forth. However, I deactivated, uninstalled and reinstalled PS CS4 and as Wade and Nat experienced, the AeronChair.kmz file opened in seconds.

I'm going to reinstall my plugins a few at a time and see if I can spot a culprit. If not, I'll presume somehow I just had a bad installation. If I can find the problem I'll post it here so others may be able to avoid it.
