1. Re: CS4 layer masks driving me nuts!
Chris Cox Feb 27, 2009 1:20 PM (in response to mcdj18)No, the fact that it was targetting the layer mask by default was a bug that caused a lot of other nasty problems. It really should target the contents of the layer by default. -

(Mark_Reynolds) Feb 27, 2009 3:41 PM (in response to mcdj18)Yes that's an improvement. -
3. Re: CS4 layer masks driving me nuts!
mcdj18 Mar 2, 2009 3:04 PM (in response to mcdj18)Well much of my masking is done on adjustments layers, so there is no "content". Wish there was a pref to automatically select the mask. I'm getting carpal tunnel. -
4. Re: CS4 layer masks driving me nuts!
Chris Cox Mar 2, 2009 3:44 PM (in response to mcdj18)There is a content to adjustment layers: the result of the adjustment. There just isn't content you can paint on. -
5. Re: CS4 layer masks driving me nuts!
(Mark_Reynolds) Mar 3, 2009 9:30 AM (in response to mcdj18)Very accurately described Chris. There used to be a shortcut for selecting the mask which I think was command \ - but for some in CS4 this doesn't seem to work anymore. You can record an Action to "select Mask Channel" and assign an F key to this. This will select any layer mask on the current layer -

Ann Shelbourne Mar 3, 2009 10:45 AM (in response to mcdj18)Cmd back-slash does work still in CS4 to select the mask or it does for me under OSX 10.4.11 anyway.
Check System Pand photoshop shortcuts to see if you have a conflict. -

ye gawds May 16, 2009 8:02 AM (in response to (Mark_Reynolds))Hello,
new around here.
I've just moved 'house' from a G4 Photoshop 7 and OS9 to an Intel Mac, Panther and CS4 and am I having fun.Something of a learning curve to say the least. Anyway yes,I use a couple of actions for flipping back and forth between layer and mask and back and Cmd \ still works in 10.5.6 too,but is there a way of staying in mask mode as you schroll up and down between layers. Say you're working on the mask in layer twenty and you want to schroll down to the mask in layer eleven without having to then remember to select the mask when you get there.Being the absent minded sort I sometimes find I've scrolled down and forgotten to flip to the mask and start painting on the layer by mistake. It can be quite a while some times before I notice.
