My friend, it's already in there.
Shift select multiple text layers, and then select the text tool.
Do not click into an edit text box!
Apply a text from the tool bar and it will effect all selected layers.
Although, it would be amazingly cool if you could shift select multiple text layers and then edit them all at once as though they were temporarily one text box.
Then you'd shift select multiple layers, enter any text box (which would presumably make all selected text layers editable for everything other than warp effects), and then apply a font to all of the 'characters' of multiple layers.
But currently it is consistent. When a text layer is selected, only when out of the editable mode does the font apply to all characters within a text layer. Once editing the text, you must individually select which characters to apply a font to.
Exactly. :-) Someone in the help forum did suggest turning one box into a smart object and then duplicating it for your other boxes and that worked like a charm while not as clean as it could be if they somehow "allowed" it to work the way you describe.
Oh. I'm sorry. I misunderstood your problem. I thought you meant applying a different font to many layers at once.
Instanced layers is a popular request around here, and not dissimilar from a suggestion I made a few days ago ;). Currently, smart objects are the only way to achieve that functionality.
