Play your DVD material through your DV camera and capture that. It will be converted to DV AVI type2, but the quality will take a hit. You started out with apple juice, no way to get back the original apples used to produce the juice. I'm not familiar with Carbon Coder, so I can't comment on that.
Using DVD material not suited for editing may give you an elaborate workflow and meager results.

The footage was given to me in .vob file format, so I can't play it through the camera...
And coming back to the Apple Juice ;), I know that the quality did already take a hit that's why I'm (desperately) trying to keep the quality we have to start with...
What about converting to .avi using the HuffYUV codec (read that in another post)?
HuffYuv is lossless. If you can take the storage hit, it is likely your best option. Just use the 24 bit version, no sense in going the 32 bit way since there is no alpha channel anyway in your source.
