Normally, pointing a single file to the right folder, Premiere will find the rest of the files in that folder.
Thanks for the reply - I've tried to link en masse this way a number of times and it just doesn't work for me. I've tried pointing Premiere to the files it thinks are missing on project startup an also tried to link up multiple files using the link command after the project is opened (tried this in PPro 2 and CS3).
Do you have any ideas about what I might be doing differently than you?
How many folders are your files in? Have they changes file names at all?
Jim, Sorry for the delay in answering - overlooked the email. I keep all of my files related to a given project in one Windows folder and use numerous sub-folders and sub-sub folders etc. Most of my clips will be in one large sub-folder labeled "Clips".
I can manually link a file in the Premiere project to its appropriate clip in the Clips folder within the Project folder - but Premiere ignores the fact that most of the other clip files in the project could be linked to clips in that same folder.
This creates a huge problem if I want to move the project to a bigger drive, etc.
Premiere will normally ask about each kind of file - video, audio, pictures, preview, titles, etc. I don't think there's anything you can do to change that. But, so long as all files of a certain type are in the same folder, Premiere should find the others of that same type after asking for the first one. Then it will ask for the next type of file, and so on. Is that hot happening for you?
No, it's not happening. For example, I just took one my current projects that is fully operational - moved that project folder containing all project sub-folders and clips - to another drive, and it won't detect the other clips when I link one clip. This is despite the fact that I have all of my clips in one sub-folder in the project named "clips."
I repeated this again to verify the problem by creating a test project using the following exact procedure:
Create folder on C drive named "Test - Main Project Folder"
Create sub-folder named "Clips"
Place 3 video clips in Clips folder
Open Premiere CS3
Create new project named "Test"
Import 3 clips from Clips folder into the "Test" project
Move the master folder called "Test - Main Project Folder", containing the project file "Test" and sub-folder "Clips" to another drive which happens to be F:
Go to Premiere and select "open project" - browse to new project location, that is F:\Test - Main Project Folder\, and open "Test"
Attempt to open "Test" from new location in Premiere. Premiere gives warning that it couldn't find one of the files and gives the option of offlining that file or offlining all project clip files.
Select "offline all files" (canceling out of the pop-up and continuing to open project makes no difference - I still end up with the same problem)
Clip files show up as "media offline"
Rt click on first clip and select "link media"
Browse to clip folder in "Test - Main Project Folder", now on drive F:
Select file associated with first clip
First clip is now linked, and the other two clips "Clips" are ignored, and remain in the "offline media" status.
Am I using a different procedure than you do?
Yes. Don't offline them at all. Once you do, relinking will forever after be one at a time. You have to show it where the file is when you first open it, and continue with each type of file until it stops asking.
Many thanks - based on your reply, I was able to figure out what I was doing wrong. I was either offlining file, or other times I would cancel out of this pop-up box. What I SHOULD have done, is identify the file specified in the "Where is file so-and-so?" blank and point Premiere to that file BEFORE leaving the pop-up box.
When I did that it brought in all the other files. Thanks again. This has saved me a ton of work.
When Updater tries to update with 3.1.1, it can't find Premier. Somehow I apparently have the application in the wrong place? Also, although I recently installed a Maxtor hard drive, the application keeps crashing. Any thoughts?
this is totally unrelated to this original thread.
