Make cuts at the beginning and end of the desired section, than change it's gain. Add audio crossfades if you need to.
I guess that would work but appears almost as laborious as the process I now follow. It would also make later adjustments a bit difficult. I should mention that I generally have about 60 - 70 such insertions in a film of 30 minutes length. What I would like to discover is a way to have a keyboard shortcut that drops the gain from 0 to -12dB and another that reverses the process.
I don't think that can be done.
