Use the brackets ("[" and "]") with the ALT modifier to set the work area bar with the CTI.
ALT+[ is the work area start point
ALT+] is the work area end point
Very kind of you to point that out, but I was asking about the advertised method of selecting contiguous clips, which is not the same thing at all. It has always worked on earlier versions, is advertised for this one, but doesn't seem to work here.
I tried in both CS3 and 2.0 and neither version does anything when I Alt+click on the work area bar. Targeting different tracks and making clip selections made no difference. I would recommend you file a bug report.

Where is that behavior advertised, David?
The on-line help says: "Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (Mac OS) the work area bar to resize it to the width of all contiguous clips under the point you click."
This is repeated at the top of page 227 of the PPro CS3 manual.
Thanks for the confirmation Eddie, I'll file a bug report.
