I've tried several of these programs as well and have similar problems. It seems that the main problem is that if they do a decent job of converting it to AVI, they take longer to encode than the length of the footage.
So I play the DVD and capture it into Premiere with my trusty old Sony DVMC-DA2 Media Converter.
There may be a software that does it faster, mind you, I just haven't found it yet.
For me best way is to import DVD in Ulead. You get all VOBs in single MPG file, same quality as on DVD.Than I go with it into Premiere and export as AVI.
This take some time but it works great. For me.
Dont try to do anything with MPG.Edit when come to AVI.
Sorry my english is so bad.
I use ProCoder. Expensive but very good.
no...this is what you do...
download AVISYNTH 2.5x install that...
Download AVISYNTH Plug in for Premiere Pro.... Install That
Now Down Load the "Comdbined Coumnity Codec Pack" And Install That...
Creat these script in note pad and make sure the extension is .avs.
Import into Premiere Pro..
or demux the VOB using DVDripping software...
and import the .mpg like normal
and create scrpit just like above for the .ac3 audio..
very easy and best results................
My advice is to avoid *anything* that has "codec pack" in the name.
I still like VirtualDub.

Agree with Jeff. Codec packs are easy to install but hard to get rid of; it seems.
this codec pack is essential as it has FFDSHOW directshow filters.with this you can import anything you want.even if premiere doesnt support it many professionals including myself use this.what happens if you have a client who last minutes says can you use some of this footage I have on DVD? what you gonna re-render to .avi? then re-render back to mpeg? Sure lets go 4:2:0 to 4:1:1 back to 4:2:0.i dont know about yous guys but I like to deliver the absolute best quality I can. And with mainconcepts smart render you wont have to re-render.. RIP IT AND STRIP IT! And import everything natively..
> with mainconcepts smart render you wont have to re-render
With the MainConcept plug-in you won't need to convert in the first place, making the codec pack moot.
what your lame i didnt know you could import .ac3 with mainconcept? oh and you could import native .vob? really know your stuff eh?
This filter is particularly heinous. Avoid it.
>i didnt know you could import .ac3 with mainconcept? oh and you could import native .vob?
Yes and yes. It works here.
