2. Re: Editing Field Sequential Video
Dan Isaacs Sep 2, 2008 10:25 AM (in response to Quentin Holmes)> 60 fps field sequential video
Huh? Is this really 720x240 @ 60 fps -- or do you really mean that it is just a normal NTSC DVD? -
3. Re: Editing Field Sequential Video
Quentin Holmes Sep 2, 2008 11:07 AM (in response to Quentin Holmes)Well you know i am not sure. If someone would have asked me if a normal dvd player would play 60 fps then i would have said no. But i was told that these types of movies (shutter glasses with an infrared control box) wont play on lcd TVs because they arent fast enough. Same with Projectors. Must be used on a regular TV or maybe some special equip. So i just did more reading on the subject...
The name is it really i guess. Field Sequential. So it must be interlaced frames or fields maybe. So it would be just 30 fps or 29.97 really. But with interlaced frames. The shutter glasses sync with the monitor or tv to show each eye the different fields. But you would think you would loose your smoothness of motion without the normal use of fields...
I am a bit out of my league here with the field sequential video. I normally just use side by side for my 3d video and we use a realtime converter for projection.
So if it is just some kind of interlaced video what are my best options?

4. Re: Editing Field Sequential Video
Quentin Holmes Sep 2, 2008 11:25 AM (in response to Quentin Holmes)So after more reading... i now know what interlaced video is. Have never had to deal with it i guess. So i assume that it is interlaced video left eye and right eye sharing the full resolution of the image. If i understand that properly. And the limitation of viewing with shutter glasses is that most new displays dont use interlacing.
So are there editing recomendations for this?

5. Re: Editing Field Sequential Video
Jim_Simon Sep 2, 2008 11:36 AM (in response to Quentin Holmes)Most video is interlaced. Even 24p cameras actually record an interlaced signal. Have you tried just converting to DV and editing that? -
6. Re: Editing Field Sequential Video
Quentin Holmes Sep 2, 2008 12:01 PM (in response to Quentin Holmes)Funny i have been reading non stop about all these things that i have basically just ignored over the years as i just use premier for basic functions.
So my first attempts at converting and editing may just have been bad because i was trying to force it to 60 fps.
I will attempt a DV conversion and then open it up in Premier and check out the fields.
Are there formats that i should stay away from that dont support interlaced.
I should have done my reading first. Sorry.....
But i did find a great article on Interlacing and why you need to understand it.

Quentin Holmes Sep 2, 2008 6:43 PM (in response to Quentin Holmes)Does anyone know if there is a list of good codecs to use with interlaced video. I have been looking and am not really sure i have found anything. I look up information on certain ones i normally use and they have all come back as not suporting interlaced. And you are not supposed to edit with mpeg 2 so what is my other option. There must be a good codec that supports interlaced.

Jim_Simon Sep 2, 2008 8:13 PM (in response to Quentin Holmes)I think most will, expect for maybe MPEG-1.
DV is the most used and easiest for Premiere to handle. -
9. Re: Editing Field Sequential Video
Quentin Holmes Sep 3, 2008 4:41 AM (in response to Quentin Holmes)Yes DV is great but it makes huge files. Which i know is the best but i am not doing a masterpice here. Something that is good quality and medium compression would be great.

Harm Millaard Sep 3, 2008 5:10 AM (in response to Quentin Holmes)> Yes DV is great but it makes huge files.
What is huge??? It boils down to around $ 1.50 per hour of storage. That is far cheaper than tape. If you can afford to buy tape, you can afford the storage. -
11. Re: Editing Field Sequential Video
Quentin Holmes Sep 3, 2008 6:01 AM (in response to Quentin Holmes)Well Huge is that i am not set up as a video production house so moving and editing 100 gig of movie files for no reason just doesnt make sense to me.
There must be an alternative?
And when i was checking codecs quite a few of them dont support interlaced.

Jim_Simon Sep 3, 2008 6:24 AM (in response to Quentin Holmes)Get the extra hard drive space and use DV. Options that make smaller files won't edit well. -

If you want to edit 7.5 hours of source material in a single project (which is around 100GB) then at least get some decent storage. If not, refrain from editing. -
14. Re: Editing Field Sequential Video
Dan Isaacs Sep 3, 2008 7:30 AM (in response to Quentin Holmes)On that note, consider using a different program that handles DVD MPEG2 better (Premiere Elements?) and edit straight from the original. -
15. Re: Editing Field Sequential Video
Quentin Holmes Sep 3, 2008 8:56 AM (in response to Quentin Holmes)Ok so i should use DV you say.....
I own Premier so that is what i use. No sense using a differnt program but thanks for the hint on that.
Because of the special nature of these files. Is there a way i can view the individual fields to make sure i am getting the proper filed dominance for each clip. I am sure they will all be the same but i want to make sure. I cant have the left eye right eye changing sides in the middle.
I have looked and i can seem to see anything.
