So am I to understand that the Chroma key capabilities that AE has are not required by those using PPro :).
PPro has Video and Audio Effects/Transitions as well. Is that a mistake?
Most "Video Editors" I've seen has the capability of Special Effects (as does PPro). What I don't get is why is AE not a complete subset of PPro. Or put another way, why doesn't PPro encompase all of AE and then some?
This is how I see it...
PPro is a video editing tool that can playback footage, until you have "tweaked" the picture with a transition or filter. PPro will try to playback the footage as it "passes through" the transitions and/or filters "the best it can". Depending on the algorithm and the speed of your computer this might be real time, might be "fast enough" to preview, and might need to be rendered.
AE is a compositing tool that renders every frame to get its job done. By always rendering every single frame, it allows the user to manipulate what it does by things like expressions. It also gives the user powerful animation tools that aren't really practical in a "filter-based" paradigm like PPro, like the concept of a camera that can be moved around in 3D space.
So the Chroma key features in PPro are "filters" that the video "plays through" and the chroma key features of AE are more like algorithms that get rendered as they are applied to the original image of the video.
When you Chroma key with AE you also can have layers of particle generators and other animation effects applied to the end results with each layer having access to the data of the other layers via expressions.
Think of PPro as playing video frames "through filters" to get the resulting frames and AE as rendering every frame with the effect's algorithms applied to each frame.
It seems like they do the same thing and you can achieve the same results many times, it is more of how they achieve the results. Some cases are better suited for one paradigm than the other.
If you are doing simple cuts and edits, you want the PPro paradigm. If you are doing complex animations and particle generation, you probably want AE.
... hopefully that is accurate and makes sense. I know I'm more confused now :)
I think your explanation is quite clear! It makes more sense to me now and puts a clear boundary between PPro and AE. I also do find that AE is quite a bit slower than PPro (it makes sense now after your explanation).
When you say "expressions", what exatly does that mean? Is there some programability there?
Eddie, thanks for the link. I guess it means one has to know the object model in order to write expressions since it doesn't look like a solid code editor per se.

Sort of, but not really. You can use the pickwhip to parent one item to another. That will put an equation on the line that you can then edit. There are places to learn more about epressions, like this one:
