It works fine, but not especially as I would like it to. I end up exporting a series of stills instead of a video, and you can't import DV AVI as easily as I would like.
But there is no better or easier way to get those effects.

I am working on a football video and I want a flame to follow the path of the football throw. Any suggestions?

I prefer using pI with AE. Serious masking is required to pull off a convincing effect like you are trying to do.
This series of 3 tutorials by Jeff Bellune might be helpful if you haven't already seen them.
