With the updates, the problem is very likely a corrupted font.
There have been a lot of articles on this problem, and in most cases, it's corruption in the font file(s), that cause this.
There are several font repair utilities listed in those.
Some have luck by uninstalling (do not remove from the HDD) half of the installed fonts - try PP. If problem presists, uninstall half (of your remaining half) and try again. Keep this "half uninstalled" until it does work. You'll likely have found the group with your bad font. As this consumes a lot of time, I like programs like Extensis Font Dr., that will survey all fonts (installed and also stored on the HDD) and repair, if possible, or remove the offending font.
Also note that Adobe programs are really picky with regards to fonts. Some programs are a lot less so.
