if you compare it to a good workstation
if you compare it with a run-of-the-mill Q9400 system
if you compare it to a P4 2.8
What would make it a better Q9400 system?
Boot disk WD Velociraptor 150 or 300 GB
1 x WD 750 GB projects and export (WD Caviar Black)
2 x WD 750 GB (r)aid0 media and scratch (WD Caviar Black)
1 x WD 750 GB audio and other items
If you can afford it, an Areca ARC 1680iX-12 controller with BBM and 2 GB cache and a number of extra disks in Raid3 or Raid5 or even Raid50.
ATI 4870 or nVidia GT280 video card. You need no more than 512 MB.
I will take your advice and go with the:
WD Velociraptor 300 gb for Boot,OS,and Programs
1xWD 750gb Caviar Black for projects and export
2xWD 750gb Csviar Black Raid0 for media and scratch
Every thing else will stay the same, the GC is on sale.
Also when I capture my video I will save it to the 2 raid0 drives,
when I set up the prefernces options Right?Hope you understand what
I'm trying to say.
Correct. Enjoy your new system. I don't know where you're coming from, but you'll have a nice powerful system.
I'd seriously look at the new Core i7 CPUs due out very, very soon. Early benchmarks show 30% or more improvement for video encoding over a similarly spec'd Core 2 Quad.
I'll probably will be building one in the next week, based on the Core i7-920 on a P6T mobo as a replacement for a 'smaller PC'. Everything is in stock and I await the client's approval. I'll let you know what the first impressions are.
