Camcorders for Editing

I am interested in purchasing a new camera. My present camcorder is a Sony DCR HC26 Mini DV. The camcorders I have looked at record the video to a Hard Disk, DVD, or Memory Stick. I am assuming that these cameras compress the video. How much quality do I lose? Should I purchase a Mini DV camcorder instead? My editing software is Premiere CS3.

For editing standard definition video, a tape-based MiniDV camera is still your best bet. Those other types typically shoot in MPEG, which uses high levels of compression, affecting both picture quality and ease of editing.

For a Firewire DV Camera - look at Panasonic PV-GS320 or GS500 (Note that I have not used either, but they have good reviews)
