What codec did you use to create the .avi files?
Any chance you're using the trial versions?

I assume the project created in Premiere Pro 1.5 used the cineform codec. I might mention that Vista's media player plays the audio portion of the clips, but not the video. These files play normally on a Windows XP media player. Similarly, when I import these files directly into Encore, the timeline sees the audio, but not the video. I wonder why they play normally in the PP CS3 time line, but can't be exported. Any thoughts?

Edit: Well, I can import a Cineform HDV AVI made in PPro1.5 fine into EncoreCS3. You've got yourself a case of codec madness.
Do you have PPro1.5.1 installed on this machine? The most obvious cause would be you don't have the Cineform codec installed to be able to play this stuff back.
