What are you capturing from?
If from a DVD try Slysoft.
DVD Shrink will write the DVD files to HD so they can be used over and over. However, I do recommend converting them to DV AVI before the students import them.
i would like to capture using my breakout box, thus analog. As it is now- it shows the image for about 5 seconds, then the screen goes blue. The error message appears about copyright protection.
That's kind of a long workaround, going analog and then back again to digital. Just rip and convert. Keep it digital all the way.
Your breakout box is doing the job it is required to do by law in the USA: to stop you from copying copyrighted material. No matter what you want to use the copy for. You are asking us to show you how to circumvent the law. While some countries allow the copying for personal use this is not allowed in the USA.
Thanks captain obvious. Tell me something I didn't know. I was aksing for a tip, not a notice from the FCC.
Here in the UK we can buy 'signal or timebase correctors enhancers' (they call them ha ha) for the equivalent of a few dollars. I don't think it is illegal to sell or own them although it is obviously illegal to copy copyrighted material unless for personal backup (and that is still very unclear)
So is it illegal in the US to even possess something that takes out say macrovision protection? Yet companies like slysoft are based in the US! I don't get it

No need to be so hostile.
You got tips, but you also got a reminder that you should examine your methods and intentions at least once more before you undertake your project. As you know, (better than anyone) your actions significantly impact the outlook and perceptions of the young minds you teach.
Like all advice given here and elsewhere, only you can determine its worth.
