video .avi displays as audio file

I have several .avi video files that I have worked into my project today. I am now opening my premiere project again and it cannot link to all of the clips: "different file type". Premiere basically tells me my avi video files would be audio files. If I re-import them into Premiere they actually show up as audio files! even though I can play the video file in Windows Media player and other players.

how can I get Premiere to recognise that they are not audio, but video files?

      thank you.

(The avi files have all been produced with Camtasia. Might this cause a problem? but they worked fine in Premiere earlier today. just when reopening the Premiere project on my home pc it shows them now as audio files...)
