I guess it depends on how you define a bug.
If you're asking if it will work flawlessly on every computer, regardless of the set-up or maintenance, and edit every kind of video format without a hiccup, then the answer is no. It won't.
It's not always the best tool for the job. Much depends on what you want to do and where your video is coming from.
And, of course, how well maintained you keep your computer. When a program is this intensive, if there's a bug in your operating system it will find it!
PE7 will be released shortly. I would wait for this.
Though, again, don't expect any program this intensive to work flawlessly on every computer every time, regardless of how the computer is set up and maintained or what type of video you're editing.
A bug was introduced in version 3 and retained in version 4 in which re-exporting to an AVI file that already exists gives an error. Is this bug still present in version 7?
Yes, the program will not let you overwrite an existing file, Peter.
There's no real point in buying PE4 with PE7 just around the corner. Although it has been announced, it won't start shipping in the UK via Amazon until the 13th October. You'll have a better chance with PE7 of getting it to work properly as the guys at Adobe will have had the time since PE4 was shipped to get it right this time. Fingers crossed.
just bought adobe premier elements 4. opening up the new project box , the box flickers. and sometimes p e closes for no apparent reason. am running xp. any ideas ? I have a jvc camera with usb cable pe does not seem to recogonise it.
Update your drivers, especially your audio drivers using the links in this FAQ:
Which JVC camera, what is the format? if it is a DV camcorder then PE4 will not interface to it over USB only over Firewire.
Unfortunately you seem to be suffering from what has come to be known in PE4 terms as the "Goldilocks Syndrome". Do you remember when Goldilocks ate the porridge; one was too hot; one was too cold and one was just right. This went on with the beds etc. Well, it seems (from this very forum) that PE4 has a similar problem; if your computer is over specified (even with ALL the latest available drivers installed), it won't run properly; if it is under specified (even with ALL the latest available drivers installed), it also won't run properly, it has to be just right. There are people out there who's computers are just right, as we don't hear from them, obviously.
See if you can take your copy of PE4 back to the shop (they should have told you that a new one was coming out, well, if they were a good shop) and wait for PE7 which should have all the PE4 bugs worked out. They don't have to do much with the interface as it's already flawless. Very difficult to improve on the best. They just have to make sure it works on E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E's computer.
Have a look at Steve's PE7 introduction video's on the Adobe website. That's how a software should work.
Best of luck.
