Difference between H264 and mpeg2 HD formats?

What is the difference between these two? Is one better?

H264 is more highly compressed than HDV MPEG2. This is why the H.264 format is used on camcorders that record to digital data cards or hard drives... only way to be able to capture reasonable duration videos.

The main drawback with H.264 is that it's highly compressed nature means you need a powerful computer to be able to edit and playback the clips in real time.
