Hi, Betty! Thanks for the book ref! I think you'll find it very useful.
As I said in the book, you'll only run into headaches with a cheaper (i.e., Dazzle) USB device for capturing your analog video.
The best deal out there is the ADS Pyro AV Link, which can be found for under $150 and creates excellent results.
Our FAQ offers more details on capture devices.
Thanks for the prompt reply, Steve.
It sounds like my best bet may be to buy a digital camcorder,
and use the pass through method. Now is not the right time for buying
anything expensive. Do you have a suggestion of a moderate priced
camcorder that I could use for this method until I get a little more
experienced? I usually make slideshows in PSE 7 and take into Pre 7.
I am sure your book will be of great help to me. Looking forward to
The biggest challenge with using a miniDV camcorder for pass-through is that, for some reason, the ability to do that is being eliminated from many newer camcorders. Even more challenging is that it's hard to tell which camcorders will and which won't work, since the manufacturers rarely mention it in their specs.
I guess it all depends on whether most of your work will be done with digitized analog or if you plan to shoot more of your video on miniDV or HDV. That would help determine your best investment at this point.
I noticed the lack of information in their specs when I was checking our the new models. I may keep my eyes open for a good reconditioned one. I probably will change to miniDV as I do not have anything HDV as yet.
Thank you for your help. I do appreciate it.
Thank YOU for buying my book, Betty! :)
