I captured some HD video from my Canon FH11 to my desk top and then opened it in Pre7. The clip plays in a stuttering motion. One or two seconds at a time and then it stops and then goes on several frames later.
From reading the system requirements for Pre7, I don't know if I'm in the ball park or if I need to upgrade.
Here's my stuff:
Windows XP (with Service pack 3)
Intel Pentium(R) D830 CPU 3.00GHz (Dual Core)
2.99GHZ, 3.50GB of RAM
RADEON X600 Pro
ATI Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series
LCD monitor with 32-bit color video card
1,024x768 monitor resolution at 96dpi or less
400 GB of hard drive space
What can I do to get the HD videos to play smooth?
You do not say how you captured the video, but it sounds like you didn't capture it with Premiere Elements but instead used other software (the software that came with the camcorder?) to capture it to your computer.
If you use Premiere Elements 7 to capture AVCHD, it will open the Media Downloader so that you can bring the video in as files from the camcorder's hard drive. That could make the difference.
